Here are two old sculptures of "flowers" made from natural burl shapes. These were both found in the same area of western North Carolina. They are unsigned, but the similarities in style and construction make it very likely they were made by the same person. While the exact age of each is unknown, they both seem to have been made around the 1930's or 40's. They are in excellent condition.
First is an incredible and very unusual bouquet of individual "flowers". The burls have fantastic forms and detail, and have been mounted with branch stems on a wooden base. This is a very old single board lap desk with an old checker board painted on the reverse. The lap desk is probably from the mid to late 1800's. While the painting of the checker board may have been added slightly later, it is definitely not recent, and considering the wear and surface, may have been original to the piece. The desk is made from fairly thin softwood (about 1/2" thick) and is hand cut and shaped. It is attached to two carved cross supports by old screws. It is about 36 1/2" long, by 18 1/2" wide. The checker board is about 12" by 12". Two screws and a wire were added fairly recently for hanging. It is in good condition, with normal wear from the period and an age split, visible in the photos. This "Chickenwhistle" is one of those wild pieces we come across periodically which really make us smile. This contraption has a wooden box with hinged lid, mounted on a base. Above the box is an open basket made from scrap sheet metal, with a handle at the top. The whole thing is painted red and white, with a really nice old surface to the paints. The story is that this device was placed on a piano top with a live chicken in the round metal area on top. Grain was put in the lower box. When the chicken "whistled" along with the tune being played, the lid was opened to the grain box and the chicken got its treat. This piece is 14 1/2" wide, 8" deep, and about 21" high. It supposedly is of African-American origin and is in very good, used condition. It was made c. the 1930's. It makes a great plant stand, display, or just enjoy it for itself. The price is $285.00.
