This is an extraordinary fan whimsey carving: the most intricate we have ever seen. It is all carved from a single piece of light-colored wood. At the top is a large fan. Each blade has been "feathered" by shaving very thin slivers from the edge so that they curl like plumes. The "handle" of the fan is carved into hearts and geometric shapes, with chain links at the bottom. Hanging from the chain is a bird, with wings and tail carved as three more fans. Again, this is all a single piece of wood with no joints. The whimsey has been professionally mounted in a wooden frame, with glass, against a green mat. The carving itself measures about 16 1/4" high by 13 1/2" wide; the frame is 24" high by 21 1/4" wide by 1 1/4" deep. It is in excellent, near mint condition. Age is unknown - it is not new, but was probably made in the latter half of the 20th century, and mounted more recently. The price is $1200.00. Inventory Code: TORH. Here are two pairs of "sleepy" doll eyes with the weighted mechanism to make them open and close. They have been mounted on black wooden bases so that they are free to rotate. The mechanism gives a weird "face" to the eyes. The eyes appear to be plastic, with synthetic lashes. The mechanism is steel, with heavy copper wire and a lead weight. They are in excellent condition, with light oxidation on the metal parts, and date from the mid 20th century. They are priced at $110.00 each. Doll eyes ... Another view ... They can be used for decoration, hanging, mounted on bases; or can be easily wired as lamps as all are made with holes through the base already. The ages are a bit difficult to tell, but all are old, from the latter half of the 20th century or earlier. They are in very good, used condition. There are individual descriptions and photos below. This is a very old single board lap desk with an old checker board painted on the reverse. The lap desk is probably from the mid to late 1800's. While the painting of the checker board may have been added slightly later, it is definitely not recent, and considering the wear and surface, may have been original to the piece. The desk is made from fairly thin softwood (about 1/2" thick) and is hand cut and shaped. It is attached to two carved cross supports by old screws. It is about 36 1/2" long, by 18 1/2" wide. The checker board is about 12" by 12". Two screws and a wire were added fairly recently for hanging. It is in good condition, with normal wear from the period and an age split, visible in the photos. This "Chickenwhistle" is one of those wild pieces we come across periodically which really make us smile. This contraption has a wooden box with hinged lid, mounted on a base. Above the box is an open basket made from scrap sheet metal, with a handle at the top. The whole thing is painted red and white, with a really nice old surface to the paints. The story is that this device was placed on a piano top with a live chicken in the round metal area on top. Grain was put in the lower box. When the chicken "whistled" along with the tune being played, the lid was opened to the grain box and the chicken got its treat. This piece is 14 1/2" wide, 8" deep, and about 21" high. It supposedly is of African-American origin and is in very good, used condition. It was made c. the 1930's. It makes a great plant stand, display, or just enjoy it for itself. The price is $285.00.
