Painted shelfThis is a folky hand made small shelf. It has good form and design, and was very nicely constructed from pine and crate wood. This was originally painted white which has taken on a wonderful alligatored and knobbled surface over the years. The shelf is sturdy and has more detailed elements (like mortised supports) than found in many home-constructed pieces. The size is about 20 1/2" high by 10" wide by 5 1/4" deep. Each of the shelves has a little lip on the front to contain objects. This can also be turned over to sit on a table or shelf. It was probably made in the early 1900's and is in very good condition. The price is $185.00. Inventory Code: TWKC.   Painted shelves ... Closeup of surface ... The other side ... Front view ... Closeup of top ... Closeup of middle ... Closeup of bottom ... Painted heart shelfThis is a folky three heart shelf in old dry blue paint with very good patina. The paint has a greenish tint. It is decorated with black paint around the edges. It is very decorative, nicely constructed, and unusual. The shelf is made from 1/2" thick pine boards so it does not have a heavy feel. It is painted all over, both front and back. The surface has many different tones and shades. It does not seem to be overpainted to us, but we are unsure as to how it varies so much. Perhaps it was due to the original wood from which it was made. In any case, it is very attractive. The shelf has good size and is sturdy. It is from the early 1900's, and measures 28 3/4" high by about 9 3/4" wide by about 3 1/2" deep. It has a little wear to the paint on some of the edges and the center shelf has warped. It has two hangers on the back and is sturdy and strong. Overall a very nice piece. The price is $325.00. Inventory Code: TWWA.   Painted heart shelf ... Side views ... Closeup of top shelf ... Moon and stars cupboardHere is a wonderfully folky hand made folk art cabinet decorated with stars, moons, and other carved and applied accent pieces. It can be hung on a wall or sit on something else. This piece is made from what appears to be crate and other woods. It was painted white. This has now aged and alligatored to an extremely attractive surface and patina. The cabinet has a door which opens, revealing the main storage area and a shelf above. It has the original door pull. The bottom is a drawer. This also has the original pull. The crest at the top is divided into 4 small compartments to hold additional items if desired. The cabinet is 25" high by 14 1/4" wide by 11 1/4" deep. It was likely made in the early 1900's, probably about 1910's or 1920's, and is in very good, sturdy condition, with just some slight normal wear. The price is $1100.00. Inventory Code: TWRC.   See a slideshow of several views [569k].

Painted barrelThis is a painted wood barrel, with a slot in the lid for collections. It is decorated with red, white, blue, maroon, and silver, with the words "Elevator Fund" "Want To Walk Or Ride!", and a large hand with extended thumb. Part of the lid is hinged, to remove the collections, with a metal hasp. It stands 30" high, and is 18" in diameter at the top, about 21" in diameter at the middle. Age is c. 1940's, and it is in good display condition. Because the wood has shrunk with age, the upper metal hoop is a little bigger than the barrel, however, it is securely in place. The bottom of the barrel, and a bottom hoop are missing, but the barrel is still solid and sturdy. It makes a great end table, or start a collection for your own elevator. The price is $495.00. Primitive benchThis is a very primitive "make-do" bench or small table, painted grey and red. It was made from leftover scraps of wood - some with cracks, knots, or partial cuts, whatever was available. From these odds and ends, and lots of big nails, someone made up a sturdy and functional piece. This table dates from the 1940's or 50's; it is 34" wide by 11" deep by 16 1/2" high. Since the cracks are original, it is in very good condition with minor paint wear. The price is $110.00. Inventory Code: TAWW.   Painted primitive bench ... Front view ... Back view ... 60's Mirrored shelfThis 1960's mirrored shelf looks great as a decorative object and makes a functional display that shows off both sides of the objects. There are openwork areas on each side of the central mirror. It is just under four feet long by two feet high. The dimensions are 45 1/2" wide by 21" high by 4 1/2" deep. It is in excellent condition. There is one unobtrusive small crack on the lower shelf that does not affect the sturdiness. The price is $175.00. Inventory Code: AAAW. Image ... Label on back ... Horseshoe standAn old plant stand made from welded horseshoes. Good form and design. It is 27 1/4" high by 13 1/2" in diameter; in excellent condition with weathered black painted surface. Probably made in early 1900's. The price is $295.00. Inventory Code: ASCK. Image ... Another view.

standThis is square plant stand with a bottom shelf. It has a sculptural look. Made out of wood strips, with some running on the diagonal. It is in very good condition, and has an old dark red paint over an older green. It is 10 1/4" square and 24" high. From around the 1930's. The price is $160.00. Inventory Code: ASHH. Tramp art treeThis wonderful display tree is hand made and has great, weathered gray and red paint. Formerly used as a plant stand, it also looks super with small carvings, tramp art, or (name your favorite collection). There are small wheels on the bottom to move it. It is 51 1/4" high by approx. 30" by 30". C. 1940's, it is in very good, weathered condition: a few of the platforms have cracks, but all are sturdy and useable. The price is $1100.00. Inventory Code: PRRO. Image ... From above ... Closeup ... Another angle ... Displaying a collection (not included).    Larger images:   Image ... From above ... Closeup ... Another angle ... Tramp art tableThis is a wild and wonderful 5-legged tramp art stand or table. It is about 19 3/4" high by 13" by 14 1/4" across the top and 15" across the legs. The surface is extremely nice, having old oxidized gold over silver on the chip-carved and layered legs and pedestal. The round top is decorated in swirls of many colors. These look like a combination of sponge or stipple painting and then blue and white oils applied more thickly. The piece was probably made c. 1920. One of the little rectangular pieces around the top edge is missing, and there is some loss to the others. It is in otherwise excellent condition, is sturdy, and very unusual. The price is $550.00. Carved standThis amphibian-covered stand is carved from diamond willow, with a soapstone base. The natural contours and ridges of the diamond willow have been carved into snakes, frogs, and salamanders, all very finely detailed with set in eyes and lines, spots, etc. The match holder (?) on top is incised with the words "F. Reichter, square bow, flat bottom, 1859 Minnesota River" and is supported by a brass hose nozzle. The silver paint looks fairly recent, but the snakes, etc. all have a very good, old, dark, patinated surface. The stand is 44" tall, the base is 9 1/2" in diameter, and the condition is excellent, with one old, probably original break near the base. The price is $750.00. Inventory Code: PHTS. Finster clock caseThis is a large and colorful clock case made by Howard Finster, with ink stampings of his name and address on the back. It has very good form, scalloped carving, impressed circles (from a little machine he made), and turned vertical supports in the front. It is in almost perfect condition, except that the very top of the crest has been broken. (This could be rounded easily). The top appliqued "flower" is painted red, green, and white, and around the center are diamonds highlighted in green paint. The print of the roses and the back cardboard are original. The case is 20 1/4" high, 18" wide, and 3 1/2" deep. The surface is a medium brown varnish. It was probably made about the 1960's, and overall, one of the nicer Finster cases around. The price is $395.00. Inventory Code: ARCK. Image ... Closeup of painted detail ... Top half ... Lower half ... One side ... The other side ... Back ... Finster's stamp ... Another copy of the stamp.

Funky chest of drawersThis is an amazing assemblage of scraps of wood, sardine cans, roofing nails, and some fasteners. Put them all together with plenty of imagination, give it a couple coats of paint, and out comes a very folky and original "what-not" chest of drawers. This little hand-made apothecary (loosely termed) has a sardine can as the bottom of each drawer to hold items. Actually, the can fits so well into the lap jointed wood that the lip of the can supports it. This creative piece also has 3 small cubby holes for additional storage. It came from rural Iowa and was likely made around the 1940's. It is painted an old gray and white. The drawer pulls are old roofing nails. It is constructed from pine; is in very good usable condition and could easily be hung. This piece is 22 1/4" long by 9 1/2" high and 7" deep including the pulls. You can be sure it is truly one-of-a-kind. The price is $235.00. Inventory Code: THAO.   See a Slideshow of several views. [489K]

Twig tableThis is an exceptionally intricate, folky, and artistic table. It is made from branches - both whole and split, twig, and burls; and is painted a deep reddish maroon with highlights and sections of gold and blue. The top has a design which incorporates the twigs into a cross surrounding another cross, and itself surrounded by sections set in herringbone patterns. The ends of the top had burls attached, and the sides are covered with split pieces. The six legs, made from heavier branches are interlocked and form an interesting sculpture in themselves. The table is sturdy and usable. It is 30 1/2" high by 32" wide and 18" deep. It is in excellent condition, and is contemporary; having been made about 2000 by the North Carolina artist, Gregory Smith. He has signed it under the top, and calls it his Easter Table. The price is $650.00. Inventory Code: ARAC. Image ... Another angle ... Top ... One side ... The other side ... One end ... The other end, from above ... Closeup of one end ...
