Folk art, antiques, and outsider art

• This is a folky house with chip carved tramp art elements, and great old paint decoration. It was made in the early 1900's and is constructed from crate wood, and pine. The house is 20" long, 11" wide at the eaves, and 13 3/4" high to the top of the chimney. The colors are red, white, and blue, plus some wood which has naturally aged to a light gray. The paints have taken on a wonderful patina and some have crazed or crackled. The house has other folk decoration such as stones inset in a panel on the rear and dots of white on the front top. Each of the chip carved notches on the front porch was also painted in blue or red. There are two side benches under the covered porch. The door opens to reveal the inner house. Everything is nailed and still fairly sturdy, although there is some little movement of a few pieces. The windows are glass. There is a bit of normal loss to the paint and perhaps the house was at one time decorated with more stones or shells. Overall, this is a colorful and rather intricate folk art model. • The first and largest is a black dump truck painted with Jim Beam whiskey slogans. It is 12" long by 6 1/2" wide by 6 1/4" high, made from pine boards with wooden wheels that turn. • This is an elegant 1920's style car carved from a single block of lightweight wood and painted. It is 11 1/4" long, 4 3/4" wide, and 3 1/4" high. • This is a model of an old motorized farm wagon/truck. It is built mostly from crate wood, with solid wood, metal tacks, and turned wood wheels added. Probably c. 1930's, it is 8 1/4" long by 4 1/4" wide by 2 3/4" high. One wheel is chipped and another with an old repair, otherwise excellent condition. The price is $110.00. • This folky painted pickup truck was made c. 1940's from wood, with hard rubber tires added. It is 7" long by 3" wide by 2 7/8" high, in excellent condition, with great paint. The price is $175.00. • This car was a prizewinner in the Cub Scouts' Pinewood Derby. It was proudly mounted to create its own trophy. The imaginatively painted car is 6 3/4" long. The wood base it is mounted on has a metal eagle applied above the car, and is marked "2nd Place" on the back, and signed on the bottom. The overall size is 10 1/2" wide by 5 1/4" high by 4 3/4" deep. It is in excellent condition with a few stray paint specks on the base. The price is $95.00. • This small bottle whimsey has a fishing trawler built inside. The smokestack has cotton "steam", and the intricate rigging is made from sticks, thread, copper wire, and mesh nets. It is fastened to a wood stand. The bottle is 4 1/2" long by 2 1/8" in diameter; it is 2 3/4" high with the stand. The condition is excellent. The price is $75.00. • This is a three-dimensional carved airplane propeller with an electric clock mounted in the center. It is 17" high by 18 1/2" wide by 3" deep, finished in old, crazed brown and silver paint. It is signed "Ed 1952" on the back and, it is in excellent condition, one blade of the propeller is slightly loose. The clock runs, with a slight humming sound typical of an electric clock. • This is a decorative cast iron flange in a snowflake-like pattern. It has an old, uneven coat of subdued reddish-brown paint. The casting is a little uneven, as can be seen in the photos. From the early to mid 1900's, it is in very good condition and measures 6 5/8" in diameter by 3/4" thick at the center. It is an attractive design. The price is $65.00. • This is a whirligig with a man cranking a Model T type car. It is painted mainly in red, white and blue. The name Henry III is painted along one side, and the car's passengers are drawn in pencil. The man is quite folky, with a smiling face and blue overalls. It appears to be from the 1940's or 50's, and is mounted on a more recent wood base, which is included. The condition is excellent with slight weathering from outdoor use. It is 22 1/2" long; as mounted on the base it is 17 1/2" high. The man stands 5 1/4" high and the propeller is 10" in diameter. • This handmade rocket ship was constructed from turned solid wood, heavy chipboard tubing, and plywood, and was painted silver - which is now oxidized. Probably made in the 1970's, it is 21" high, 8 1/4" across the legs, and has a body 4 1/4" in diameter. The top half can be removed. It was made from a solid piece of pine which was turned and carved into shape. The legs are plywood. They also form an interior structure on which the top sits. The tubing is the like very heavy shipping tubes. The rocket has USA painted on it, and a printed cloth American flag glued on. The condition is very good. The price is $85.00. Inventory Code: AAHT. • This reptile and amphibian-covered stand is carved from diamond willow, with a soapstone base. The natural contours and ridges of the diamond willow have been carved into snakes, frogs, and salamanders, all very finely detailed with set in eyes and lines, spots, etc. The match holder (?) on top is incised with the words "F. Reichter, square bow, flat bottom, 1859 Minnesota River" and is supported by a brass hose nozzle. The silver paint looks fairly recent, but the snakes, etc. all have a very good, old, dark, patinated surface. The stand is 44" tall, the base is 9 1/2" in diameter, and the condition is excellent, with one old, probably original break near the base. The price is $750.00. Inventory Code: PHTS. • This whimsey pin is a carved leaf with three dangling baskets carved from peach pits. The baskets are attached with hand made copper wire loops. The leaf is 3 1/2" wide, each basket is about 1" high, and the overall height is 2 1/4". A safety pin is attached to the back for wearing. • This is a good looking, detailed cast iron finial. From St. Louis, probably late 1800's, it is an extremely nice decorative piece. It has an old, dark, oxidized surface and is mounted on a painted wooden base. It is 17" tall and 5 1/2" across; in excellent condition. The price is $250.00. • This is a set of approximately 70 hand carved jackstraws. There is a variety of different shapes: no two are quite alike. Two have bent metal pins in the end as hooks for pulling out the selected straw. They are old and well used, with a good patina on their unfinished surfaces, and in a worn, old cardboard box, with the words "Jack's Straws" pencilled in. They range from 1" to about 3 1/4" long, with most 2 3/4" to 3"; probably from the early 1900's, in very good condition. The price is $250.00 Inventory Code: PWSW. Image.

• This is a nice, 19th Century, zinc pineapple finial. It has very good form and well oxidized surface. This architectural piece incorporates elements of a fleur-de-lis and is topped with a pineapple. The condition is very good, although it does have a small dent, small separation of a little seam, and some old paint - probably from when the building was painted. • This unusual child's quilt from Iowa has red and white crosses, with smaller crosses pieced into the sashing. From the 1930's/40's, it is machine pieced and quilted, and measures 34 1/2" by 52 1/2". It is in good condition, with one small spot. The price is $375.00 Inventory Code: PWPT.   Image ... • Remember the 70's? This political memory bottle is covered with Republican campaign buttons, flags, plastic marching band figures, bullets, a soldier, "Official U.S. Taxpayer G.O.P" buttons, and little plastic critters, some with wiggly eyes. • This is a lamp with hand relief carved symbols associated with sailors as decoration. It is finished in a crazed dark lacquer. The symbols include a heart, anchor, star, and cross.
