Folk art, antiques, and outsider art

• This is an old, large, one-of-a-kind robot made from various cans, cut sheet metal, coffee pot, bottle caps, a funnel, and other objects. It is painted red, black, and blue which have oxidized and taken on a rich dark surface over the years. It has a coffee pot for the head, and the feet are from sardine cans. The robot has a heavy metal wire coming out of the head for hanging. It is in very good, typically used condition. While the age is unknown it certainly is not recent, and looks like it was probably made in the 1950's or 60's. It is about 30" high by 15" wide by 8" deep. • This second folk art robot is somewhat larger than the one above, and was probably made by the same person. It was also made from found objects, including cans, spoons, a bucket, bottle caps, a funnel, and other objects. It is painted gold which has oxidized and taken on a rich dark surface over the years. The hands are made from large metal spoons or ladles, and the feet are from sardine cans. The robot has a bolt and heavy metal wire coming out of the head for hanging. It is in very good, typically used condition. While the age is unknown it certainly is not recent, and looks like it was probably made in the 1950's or 60's. • This is an old, large, cast iron horse head for a hitching post. It came from Iowa, and was probably made in the early 1900's. The head is about 12 3/4" high by 9 1/2" from the nose to the back of the neck. The base is about 5 1/2" in diameter. It has several old layers of paint, with a nice, weathered surface showing some slight old rust. The eyes have been painted white and black. • This is a decorative double caliper, hand made from iron. It has a great look and wonderful rich dark surface. Both sides of the calipers swivel, so they can be shown in the way that displays best. This piece is in very good condition. It is almost 17 1/4" long. At the joint it is about 1" thick. The thickness of the pieces vary; they were likely hand forged and beaten to get the desired depth. • This is a really intricate, puzzle work style, tramp art whimsey. It is so well done that the end can't be found. This interlocking piece is very sturdy and can be easily used as a frame. It is similar to those made in a crown of thorns style. The frame or whimsey has a nice natural surface. It is about 6 1/4" in outside diameter, and is about 1" deep. • This is a large, well-made tramp art box with outstanding extra details. A small, removable sliding piece hides the keyhole in the front. The inside is padded and upholstered with rose-colored fabric studded with numerous fabric-covered buttons. Two large upholstery needles were left in the lining. A metal handle is set into the top. The key is missing: the box will open and close but not lock. The condition is very good: one small tip is missing on the top, and two layers of a pyramid on the side have loss from their tips. Both are old breaks, hardly noticeable, otherwise it is very clean with a good surface. The box was made c. 1900, and measures 17" wide by 9 1/4" high by 11 1/2" deep. The price is $1,050.00. • This is a nice old rustic end table. It is very attractive as well as sturdy. This was probably made in the 1920's to '40's. It stands about 20" high to the top of the points decorating the perimeter of the table, which is about 25" long and 13 1/2" deep. The top is a single board, the base, legs, and decoration are branches with the bark left on. This entire piece is finished in a dark varnish which has taken on a very nice surface over the years. • This is a selection of Amish drawings from OH, done in pastels. The artist, who was in her 30's when these were drawn, has been doing them since she was 12. She draws the images, and some of her family members fill them in, using colors she has selected. Their bishop allows the family to sell the drawings only if they are not signed and their names are not publicized. The drawings portray: an out-of-perspective home scene, and a series of two drawings depicting an Amish woman in a buggy being hit by a train: one just before the accident, and one just after, with the woman, horse, and buggy flying through the air. All are done in strong, rich colors, and have similar qualities of skewed perspective. They measure 30" by 40" and are contemporary pieces. They are priced at $450.00 each.

• This is a sculptural old wooden and metal chock. It was placed under the wheel of a vehicle to keep it from moving. The chock is made from a solid piece of wood around which are two studded metal bands with pointed teeth for gripping. It has a heavy metal handle on one end. The piece is about 16" long including the handle. It is about 7" high and 7" deep. The nice faded green paint is original. • This is a very weathered, primitive carved head of a bearded man. It is painted red, white, blue, and brown. It was found in Shreveport, LA, and probably dates to the 1930's or 40's. He is a cheerful fellow, standing 20" high, 8 1/2" wide, and 6 1/2" deep. While wood and paint are weathered, he is strong and sturdy, in very good display condition. The price is $325.00. • This amusing and interesting bottle whimsey has a barrel built inside and a lock stopper with a folky carved head. The top and bottom of the barrel were assembled from strips inside the bottle. Then, 17 individually carved staves were attached, and fastened with string hoops. "Apple Cider" is burned into the top, and "H. Campbell, 1989, Norwich Conn." into the bottom of the barrel. The top of the stopper is carved with a bald head with large ears and nose, and painted eyes, eyebrows, and mouth. It stands 14 1/2" tall by 4 1/2" in diameter and is in excellent condition. • This is a pitcher made from bottle caps, with a large can lid for the bottom. It has very good form, and is painted a dark, oxidized gold. This is an older piece, made from cork-lined caps. You can just make out that one or two of the caps are from Coca-Cola. The pitcher is in very good condition with minor paint wear. It stands 7 1/4" high by 11" long by 7" wide. The price is $275.00. • A nice wooden horse weathervane in weathered gray and black paint on both sides. An old spark plug was added to the front of the arrow to make it balance. It is 44 1/2" long by 16" high. The horse is cut from 1/2" plywood; the arrow is solid wood 1 1/2" thick. There is a metal plate with a hole for the pivot underneath. • This is a painted wooden parrot lawn ornament. It was probably made in the 1960's or 70's, but this is very hard to tell. It has some scuffing on the paint, but looks as though it was not outside much at all. The parrot is made from pine and is 15" tall, about 5" wide, and 3/4" thick. Inventory Code: AKSA. Ordered. • This is a one-of-a-kind whirligig which combines the action of a dancing jointed man with a spinning propeller and moving "dance floor". The base the dancer stands on goes up and down as the blades turn causing his legs, arms, and body to move. Made from wood, sheet metal, and odds and ends of hardware, including a spring, hand carved, and "make do" parts, it has a funky and unusual look. The man is carved from pine, has a top hat, and a face with nose, smile and other features. The sides are decorated with reflectors. It was originally clamped to something on top of a barn in Indiana. Now it is mounted on a base so that it is free-standing. It was probably made in the 1950's, and is in very good, used and weathered condition - although the front of one foot is long missing. Overall height with the base and original pole is 35". The whirligig itself is 21" long by 16" high by 5 1/2" wide, with an 18 1/2" propeller. The man stands 10 1/2" high. The price is $350.00. Inventory Code: AROH.   Image ... Another angle ... • This is an old towel or tie rack decorated with a hand carved bull's head with horns which are pieced in. The overall form is a shield, with a cross at the top, and has hand carved supports for the rack pegged in. On the back are two wonderful pieced in patches, one of which strengthens a split in the cross. This piece was probably made in the 1930's or 40's, and is 13" high by 9 1/2" wide by 3 1/2" deep. Other than the original repairs (which really add to the appeal for us), the condition is excellent. • Here is an old, cast iron architectural piece of wisteria vines with leaves and flowers. It could have been used as a support or simply as a decorative accent, as it has very good form. It is highly detailed on both sides and was used outdoors. This piece was probably made in the early 1900's and has the original paint. It is about 20" long by 13" high, and 1" deep. • This is a wonderful, primitive birdhouse. It is made from a section of log with a big, dense, natural burl, capped with a split pine log roof, and mounted on a plywood base. The plywood is painted in a weathered black, the rest of the wood is a natural aged and oxidized surface, with interesting designs on the back where vines once covered the log. It stands 15 1/4" high by 9 1/2" wide by 14" deep. Age is unknown, but it is old. It is in excellent, weathered condition and has a great look. The price is $175.00.   Here are several carved coconuts. The alligators are actually made to be decorative banks; with a money slot and removable plug in the bottom. The other is made to be hung. We also have more coconut carvings. -->

• This is a bank carved from a coconut. It is in the form of alligator. There is a slot in the top and a removeable plug below. 6" by 8 1/2" by 6 1/2". • Here is a series of old hand made, folky, metal cutouts painted on both sides. These pieces came out of an auto mechanic's garage in the Bedford, PA area. The garage had been closed since the 1970's and these had been adhered to the walls for decoration. As a result, many have marks on the back side showing where they were glued. These cutouts were likely made no later than the 1950's, and the look of some are definitely earlier. They are all original and untouched (other than a little cleaning).
