Tramp art churchThis is a large and impressive tramp art building: a church or school. It stands 24 1/2" tall, 13" wide, and 15 1/2" deep, in excellent condition with no loss. It has a steeple, two towers on the front, a chimney, stained glass windows, and doors that open to a carpeted interior. A door with a round glass window in the steeple presumably allowed a clock to be displayed. This compartment is lined in blue velvet. The finish is a medium-brown lacquer. The age is from c. 1900. The price is $3100.00. Inventory Code: TAAS.   Tramp art church ... Another view ... One side ... Front view ... The other side ... Back ... Closeup of steeple ... Closeup of side ... Yard art log peopleThese two large and funky yard art people have great character. One also doubles as a birdhouse. They have log torsos with hinged wood arms and legs, plywood feet, and faces highlighted with paint and found objects. They are both in excellent, weathered condition, and could be as old as the 1950's or 60's or might be a little bit more recent, but nicely weathered and not new. They were made in Minnesota. They are priced separately, with a discount for the pair.   Both yard art log people ... Front view ... The other side ... In the yard.    Larger images:   Both yard art log people ... Front view ... The other side ... In the yard. Following are individual details and photos.

The first one has a robot face made from found objects, with a plywood cap topped by a red light bulb in a ceramic socket. His expression seems dismayed. He has a blue hat, brown feet, and blue and yellow paint on his face. He measures 46" high when stretched out. Seated, as he is in the photos, he is 37" high from his feet to the top of his light bulb. He is about 12" wide, and 11" deep (21" deep when seated). The price is $750.00. The second person has a mechanism to make his tongue go in and out, and his eyes pop out and back. It works by turning the knob on the side of his face. His head is also a birdhouse, with a hole in the back. He has a painted plywood face, and blue hat and feet. He measures about 46" high overall, 39" high when seated. He is 13" wide, and 11" deep (22" deep seated). The price is $750.00. Inventory Code: TPSC.   Birdhouse man ... Closeup, tongue out, eyes in ... Closeup, tongue in, eyes out ... Front view ... Band sawThis is a decorative piece of industrial art. It is a band saw, in old green paint. The metal parts are machined, in a hand built wooden frame. It was once driven by a belt, now it is more a sculptural form without a belt or blade. The upper section has a hinged cover that opens to replace the blade. This saw was likely made sometime between the 1920's to 40's. It is 28" high by 15" wide, and 4" deep, with a base which is 12" by 17". It is in very good, sturdy condition, and has a strong and interesting look with a good surface. The price is $225.00. Inventory Code: TPSO.   Band saw ... Another angle ... One side ... This is a very nice and well done carved whimsey with a large ball-in-cage and three chain links. It is 13" long overall. The links range from 1 3/4" to 2 1/4" long, while the cage, with a fixed "link" and pyramid base is about 9" long and just over 1 1/2" square. The entire piece is carved from pine and is left in a natural finish which has taken on a rich patina. It is probably about 50 years old or more. The condition is excellent. The price is $110.00. Inventory Code: AKPW. Image ... Another view ... A third view.    Larger images:   Image ... Another view ... A third view.

Tramp art boxThis is a very nice two tier tramp art box with a style and construction which is different than most. It has a hinged top which opens to reveal a storage area, and a slide drawer in front. It is constructed from cigar box (for the drawer), pine for the top layers and structure, and thin plywood for the rest. It is finished in a medium golden brown, varnish stain. The box was likely made c. 1940 and, with the exception of some very slight loss in one bottom corner and one corner of the lid, is in excellent condition. It is about 9 1/2" high by 8 1/2" wide and 8" deep; in up to nine layers. The price is $335.00. Inventory Code: TPPW.   Tramp art box ... 3/4 view ... One side ... The other side ... Back ... This is an old, interesting figural carved wood staff labeled "Viking stave" made out of ironwood and signed Glenn Bell of Suches, GA. It includes a handle shaped like some kind of animal, with carved and painted eyes and two ears. On the shaft are several faces of people carved in depth, with extended noses, mouths incised and painted red, and eyes with brows. There are also several animal faces carved and highlighted in the bark. All of this has been left in a natural finish. There are two labels on top with details, and the letters B and E are incised into the handle. The tip is just the end of the wood. There is a little surface loss there, but the rest of the "stave" is good and solid, with a nice surface. This was probably made in the 1960s or 70's and is about 59" long. The price is $235.00. Inventory Code: ARAP.

This is an old, circular, wooden cane holder or umbrella stand. It was made as an octagon from 8 pieces of hardwood pieced and mortised together which were then turned on a lathe so it is round on the outside. It was then fixed to a turned base. All of this was finished with a very dark varnish, which has darkened more with age. This piece is in very good condition with some wear in the varnish, and stands 19" high with and outer diameter of 10" on top and 12" across the base. The opening is about 8". From the collection of Herbert Hemphill. The price is $85.00. Inventory Code: ARPT.

This is a interesting walking stick made from a carved wooden shaft with a large rifle shell casing for the tip, and topped with an animal carved from a gun handle. This last piece seems to have come from a pellet gun as the trigger has a heavy spring. The handle is incised and topped with some sort of cover. The hardwood shaft is tapered, notch carved, and decorated with diagonals, sawtoothing, long and partial lines. It is finished in varnish, and looks to be about 50 to 60 years old. This cane has been used, is in very good, sturdy condition, and is 40 1/2" long. From the collection of Herbert Hemphill. The price is $75.00. Inventory Code: ARPO.

Pen and ink drawing of an alien standing at the bottom of a canyon, with stars overhead. It is by Robert E. Gilbert, and signed "REG 1404". Drawn on heavy textured paper, 8 1/4" wide by 11" high, which is attached to a lighter sheet of paper on the back. The condition is very good with some very light foxing at the bottom edge. The price is $250.00. Inventory Code: REG79. See more of his work.       Image ... Larger image.

This is an especially nice and intricate crown of thorns cross with a folky wood carving of Jesus. The entire assemblage is 15 1/4" high, 12" wide, and 6 1/2" deep. Jesus is about 7" high, 4" wide, and an inch deep. This piece is in excellent condition, with no loss. The surface of the carved Jesus is unfinished, while the rest of the construction has a light layer of a clear coat. There are some few areas, notably on top of the two side pieces, where the finish is somewhat heavier. This unusual piece is not exceptionally old, perhaps being made in the 1980's. The price is $225.00. Inventory Code: AKAT.   Image ... 3/4 view ... Another angle ... Closeup ... Closeup from above ... One side ... The other side ... From above ... Back view ... From below ... This is a tramp art desk frame with an strong Art Deco look. The surface is painted with a marbleized finish. The frame stands 9" high by 13" wide and 3 1/2" deep. It is in almost perfect condition, with a little bit of loss to the finish. The base is layered in 6 steps, while the rest of the piece varies from three to six layers. The opening in the swivel frame is 2 3/4" by 3 1/4". On the back, the name G. Polo is incised. It is difficult to gauge the age, but is perhaps from the 1930's. The price is $325.00. This is a decorative, multi-color piece which came out of a carnival, and was likely used to throw things like pennies into the various compartments. It is made out of pine with a plywood back, and is 64 1/4" long, by 19" high and 2 1/2" inches deep - including the back. The long red compartment on top is 1 1/2" deep, while the others are 3/4" deep. Colors include red, dark blue, reddish orange, silver, green, and yellow. There are 4 bolts coming out of the top red area. This interesting piece is in very good overall condition. There is wear to the paint, some scuffs, rounded corners, all from general use. It is probably from the 1940's or 50's. The price is $350.00. Inventory Code: AKTO.

Here is a nice looking carved whimsey with a 9 link chain and a ball in cage on each end. The carving is well done, and the surface is naturally aged with a darkish patina. One of the cages is about 3" long while the other is 5" long. They each are about 1" square. The whimsey is 15 1/2" long overall, in excellent condition, and was likely made about the 1940's or so. The price is $150.00. Inventory Code: AKCP.

This is an unusual carved whimsey, with 3 balls-in-cages and sections carved with a twisted wood effect. It also is the first whimsey we have seen using a technique from wood turning: piecing many strips of different woods together before working it. In this way, there is a multi-toned effect from the various woods. The whimsey is in excellent condition, with a natural aged surface. It is 19 1/2" long by 1 1/2" square. It seems around 50 or so years old. The price is $195.00. Inventory Code: AKCA.

Here is a funky southern country quilt. The colors are tan, off-white, mustard and a little bit of salmon, which varies the pattern nicely. One of the most appealing touches is the holes in the top which were patched with salmon before it was assembled and quilted. It looks to me like an older pieced top, which got a few mouse holes in storage before being quilted by need during the Depression. The back, which folds over to form the binding, is a strong medium blue. The quilt is 60 1/2" by 83 1/2", probably from the 1930's or 40's, although some of the fabrics are older. It is machine pieced and hand quilted in a fan pattern. The condition is fair: the fabrics are all strong and not worn, but there is some overall fading, staining, and a couple of small (1/2") tears. The price is $225.00. Inventory Code: CPPO.
