Bog shoeBog shoeThese are two bog shoes - that have the look of faces. Made from wood and metal, they were attached to horses' hooves for working in the swamps and bogs for logging. The metal clasp would clamp on to the horseshoe and the wood spreads weight to support the horse. These are old and used with varying degrees of wear and loss. They came from Michigan. One of the shoes has a metal strap for support on the back, while the other has two wood strips. The first, (darker with 2 wood straps) is about 11" high by 10" wide. It also is about 1 1/4" thick, and is 2" deep including the wood straps on the back. Inventory Code: TOKA. The other, (lighter with metal strap) is about 10 1/2" high by 9" wide with the wood being 1 1/4" thick. Inventory Code: TOKP. The price for each is $80.00, with the pair for $140.00. We also have a pair of cast iron bog shoes available.   Horse bog shoes ... Another view ... Side view ... The other side ... Closeup of TOKA ... Side view of TOKA ... Closeup of TOKP ... Extremely detailed fan whimsey carvingThis is an extraordinary fan whimsey carving: the most intricate we have ever seen. It is all carved from a single piece of light-colored wood. At the top is a large fan. Each blade has been "feathered" by shaving very thin slivers from the edge so that they curl like plumes. The "handle" of the fan is carved into hearts and geometric shapes, with chain links at the bottom. Hanging from the chain is a bird, with wings and tail carved as three more fans. Again, this is all a single piece of wood with no joints. The whimsey has been professionally mounted in a wooden frame, with glass, against a green mat. The carving itself measures about 16 1/4" high by 13 1/2" wide; the frame is 24" high by 21 1/4" wide by 1 1/4" deep. It is in excellent, near mint condition. Age is unknown - it is not new, but was probably made in the latter half of the 20th century, and mounted more recently. The price is $1200.00. 5 Games in One gameboardThis is a pinball type gameboard with great color and graphics. "Poosh-M-Up 5 Game Streamliner" includes "Twenty-One - Put-N-Take - Baseball - Bagatelle - Pennants". It was made by Northwestern Products, in St. Louis, MO, and has a masonite back with a metal rim, applied printed front, wooden base, and lots of small metal pins and cups. The metal spring device along the right-hand side would have shot the balls onto the board. It is 22 1/4" tall by 12" wide by 1" deep. The condition is very good, with minor wear and soiling. It was probably made in the 1940's or 50's. The price is $225.00. Inventory Code: TOOA.   "5 Games in One" gameboard ... Closeup of top half ... Close of lower half ... Closer view of top ... These include flying birds, possibly eagles, a raven, owl, ducks, swans, and other birds, plus a stork carrying a baby. There is a fat squirrel, a dragonfly, and a giraffe. The scene includes trees, a pond, sky and clouds. The rug is made from wool rags hooked through burlap. It measures 37" by 25", in good condition with some very light soiling and a little edge wear, mainly on the back. It was probably made in the 1930's or '40's. Overall this is a nice figural rug with lots of action and detail. The price is $475.00. Inventory Code: TOAO.   See a slideshow of several views [203k].

The little weather vane is about 13 1/2" long and including the new base is 10 3/8" high. The blade is about 5 1/2" in diameter. The piece was probably made about the 1930's and is in excellent, used condition. The red and green paints have taken on a nice rich patina over the years. The price is $150.00. Probably done in the earlier part of the 1900's, it is scroll cut from hardwood, probably walnut, and finished with a thin lacquer. It has a good surface, and is in very good condition. The wall box is about 8 1/4" high by 5" wide by 2" deep. The price is $95.00. Inventory Code: TWKS.   Masonic Wall box ... Side views ... From above ... From below ... Back view ... It has translucent windows set in, the engines are painted green, the propellers red, and the rest is silver, with red, yellow, and blue circular designs on the wings and tail. The plane is 22" long by 27" wide, 15 1/2" high as mounted. The base is 11 1/4" in diameter. It appears to be from about the 1940's, or possibly earlier. The condition is good, with minor paint wear and very light surface rust. There is some loss to the tail, as seen in the closeup photo. It is very sturdy and strong for display, with a great look. Pair of carved peopleHere is a very folky pair of primitive painted carved people. They have strong personalities. The man has a carved and painted bolo tie and fancy belt buckle, with turned up cuffs on his pants. The woman is wearing a dress with lots of carved pleats, with a painted necklace and fancy belt. Both have very expressive faces. They will stand without additional support on a flat surface. The man is 17 1/2" tall by about 4 3/4" wide by 2 3/4" deep. The woman is 15 1/2" tall by about 6" wide by 3 3/4" deep. The overall condition is very good. The woman has small age splits on one hand; the other hand has been broken and reglued. The man is missing the tip of one finger. These folky folks were probably made in the 1980's, but could be earlier. They are priced at $225.00 each, or $395.00 for the pair. Yard art log peopleThese two large and funky yard art people have great character. One also doubles as a birdhouse. They have log torsos with hinged wood arms and legs, plywood feet, and faces highlighted with paint and found objects. They are both in excellent, weathered condition, and could be as old as the 1950's or 60's or might be a little bit more recent, but nicely weathered and not new. They were made in Minnesota. They are priced separately, with a discount for the pair.   Both yard art log people ... Front view ... The other side ... In the yard.    Larger images:   Both yard art log people ... Front view ... The first one has a robot face made from found objects, with a plywood cap topped by a red light bulb in a ceramic socket. His expression seems dismayed. He has a blue hat, brown feet, and blue and yellow paint on his face. He measures 46" high when stretched out. Seated, as he is in the photos, he is 37" high from his feet to the top of his light bulb. He is about 12" wide, and 11" deep (21" deep when seated). The price is $750.00. Band sawThis is a decorative piece of industrial art. It is a band saw, in old green paint. The metal parts are machined, in a hand built wooden frame. It was once driven by a belt, now it is more a sculptural form without a belt or blade. The upper section has a hinged cover that opens to replace the blade. This saw was likely made sometime between the 1920's to 40's. It is 28" high by 15" wide, and 4" deep, with a base which is 12" by 17". It is in very good, sturdy condition, and has a strong and interesting look with a good surface. The price is $225.00. Inventory Code: TPSO.   Band saw ... Another angle ... One side ... This is an old, interesting figural carved wood staff labeled "Viking stave" made out of ironwood and signed Glenn Bell of Suches, GA. It includes a handle shaped like some kind of animal, with carved and painted eyes and two ears. On the shaft are several faces of people carved in depth, with extended noses, mouths incised and painted red, and eyes with brows. There are also several animal faces carved and highlighted in the bark. All of this has been left in a natural finish. There are two labels on top with details, and the letters B and E are incised into the handle. The tip is just the end of the wood. There is a little surface loss there, but the rest of the "stave" is good and solid, with a nice surface. This was probably made in the 1960s or 70's and is about 59" long. The price is $235.00. Inventory Code: ARAP.

This is an old, circular, wooden cane holder or umbrella stand. It was made as an octagon from 8 pieces of hardwood pieced and mortised together which were then turned on a lathe so it is round on the outside. It was then fixed to a turned base. All of this was finished with a very dark varnish, which has darkened more with age. This piece is in very good condition with some wear in the varnish, and stands 19" high with and outer diameter of 10" on top and 12" across the base. The opening is about 8". From the collection of Herbert Hemphill. The price is $85.00. Inventory Code: ARPT.

Pen and ink drawing of an alien standing at the bottom of a canyon, with stars overhead. It is by Robert E. Gilbert, and signed "REG 1404". Drawn on heavy textured paper, 8 1/4" wide by 11" high, which is attached to a lighter sheet of paper on the back. The condition is very good with some very light foxing at the bottom edge. The price is $250.00. Inventory Code: REG79. See more of his work.       Image ... Larger image.

Doll Mold This is a very unusual mold for a doll's hands and legs. It has a fabulous surface and color, and is in the original industrial cage including the working mechanisms. This has been mounted on a newer base. The piece can be lifted off to reveal the mechanical portion. The mold assemblage including the cage is about 19" wide by 11 1/2" high and 6 1/2" deep. With the base it is 22 1/2" wide by 14" high and 7 1/2" deep. This piece is in excellent condition and is visually striking. It is very unusual to find these molds with the cages intact and complete with the mechanical portions. It likely was made in the earlier part of the 1900's. This is one of several doll molds available: you can see the others here. The price is $675.00. Inventory Code: THAT.   Doll mold ... From one side ... From the other side ... Industrial brass faucetThis is a sculptural old and unusual long brass faucet with a heart shaped handle. It has a wonderful look to it and is now mounted on a new base and stand that display its classic features. We are not sure of the original use of this decorative industrial piece as we have not seen one quite like it before. It certainly is old, likely from the early 1900's, or possibly earlier. The top turns and can even be removed to see how the liquid would be allowed to flow. The piece is in excellent old condition. It has a great surface and color as well as very nice form. The faucet itself is 9 1/2" long by about 2" wide by 5 1/4" high. The full size, on the base and stand is 11 1/2" by 4" by 7 1/2" high. The price is $150.00. This is an unusual carved whimsey, with 3 balls-in-cages and sections carved with a twisted wood effect. It also is the first whimsey we have seen using a technique from wood turning: piecing many strips of different woods together before working it. In this way, there is a multi-toned effect from the various woods. The whimsey is in excellent condition, with a natural aged surface. It is 19 1/2" long by 1 1/2" square. It seems around 50 or so years old. The price is $195.00. Inventory Code: AKCA.

Cedar table wareThis is a 5 piece set of rustic decorative table ware items made from cedar. The group includes 2 candle sticks, a round flat serving tray, a square bowl set on 3 legs, and a larger rectangular bowl or tray. The last two might be used for holding some things like fruit, nuts, candy, or snacks.

The pieces probably were made about the 1940's. They are all finished in a clear gloss varnish, and are all generally in very good condition with some minor wear. The largest piece does have a little loss of applied pieces. The bases of items are plywood. On this are applied all sorts of small pieces of cedar, making a variety of designs. The candle sticks are turned from solid cedar and put on a base, while the square bowl sits on 3 legs which are branches of one cedar piece. The round tray is decorated with applied pieces on the top and all around the edges. The price for the group is $275.00. Inventory Code: TCKW.   Cedar table ware ... Another view ... From above ...
