Here are three folk art cars made mostly from telephone wire, plus some found objects. They were done by Clifton Eugene Dale as payment for treatment by his local doctor, who was a car collector. Mr. Dale lived in Galax or Independence, VA. Each car is hand made, fairly detailed, and in very good condition. They are not new, but age is unknown. The cars are colorful, somewhat stylized and idiosyncratic. They are priced individually, with a discount for the group.

Telephone wire car modelThis white touring car is the largest and most detailed of the three. It is about 13" long by 7" high by 6 1/2" wide and has a vinyl top covering the rear seat, and a "spare tire" on one side. The price is $225.00. Inventory Code: TWOS.   Telephone wire car ... Model touring carThis green, blue, white, and black car has seats at both ends opening in to the center (a reversible tourer?). It is well built with lots of nice detail and is also in very good condition. This car is about 11" long by 5 1/2" wide by 5 1/2" high. The price is $175.00. Inventory Code: TWOP.   Model touring car ... Side view ... The other side ... Another angle ... Front views ... Back views ... From above ... From below ... With a soda can for scale ... Telephone wire carThis boxy green car seems to represent an early vehicle. It also is very detailed, including a lever for steering instead of a wheel, and is almost as tall as long. The car is 8 1/2" long by 8" high by 4 1/4" wide. It is in very good condition also. The price is $150.00. Inventory Code: TWOA.   Model car ... Side view ... The other side ... Front views ... Pinwheel quiltThis is an African-American quilt in a vivid, folky pinwheel pattern. The cotton fabrics have hearts, clubs, diamonds, and spades woven in. The colors are a medium blue with white, and a warm terracotta orange and white. Sometimes the back of the fabric was used for variation. The back is cotton muslin, and the batting is polyester. It measures 65" by 78", and looks great hung or on a bed. This quilt was made in Texas, probably c. 1980's, and is in excellent, crisp, unused condition. There is one small dark spot on the front, 1" by 1/2" which does not go through to the back. It was probably on the fabric before the quilt was put together. It is hand pieced and hand quilted. The back was folded over and machine stitched to finish the edges. The price is $475.00. Inventory Code: TPAW.   Pinwheel quilt ... Closeup of one block ... Closeup of two blocks ... Bird carvingHere is a funny little bird carving. Similar to a sandpiper, it might be called a "shelf piper" - as it certainly looks at home on a shelf. The bird is carved from a hardwood, likely walnut, and has a smooth, dark, rich natural surface. It has beads set in for eyes. One eye is black and the other red, which may account for how it leans a bit to one side. There is a small, old chip missing from the beak, and possibly one from the tail. The bird was probably made about the mid-1900's, and is 6" long by 1 1/4" wide by 4" high. The price is $75.00. Inventory Code: TOWS.   Bird carving ... The other side ... Another view ... Octagonal frameThis is an antique oak octagonal frame. An unusual and very decorative piece, it has nine openings: eight rectangles around a center oval. The frame is fairly large, about 22" across each side. It is about an inch deep. The oval opening is 3 1/2" by 5 1/2" while the rectangular openings are each about 2" by 3 1/2". This frame was likely made in the mid to late 1800's. It originally had some beaded molding around the edge however most was missing, so that has been replaced with a round molding. The frame has some very minor wear from over the years, but otherwise is in extremely good condition. It has a nice surface and color. The price is $225.00. Wagon wheel hubThis is an old wagon wheel hub. It is made from wood with metal bands around the edges for strength. In the center are hand chiseled areas for the spokes. There are traces of red paint remaining, but the surface is primarily old and oxidized from years of use. One end has the number 2 7/8 stamped in. The metal is strong. This piece was likely made in the 1800's. It is about 10 1/2"high by 8 1/2" in diameter, and in excellent weathered good condition. We also have another, similar one available. The price is $185.00. Inventory Code: TWTH.   Wagon wheel hub ... Another side ... A third side ... One end ... Closeup of end ... The other end ... The other end up ... With a soda can for scale.

Carved birdThis is a wood carving of a bird with metal legs in a wood base. The carving has "clean" lines and a very good look. This piece was likely done about the 1940's or 50's. It is painted in black and red, both of which have some crazing to the surface. The eyes are brass tacks. The bird is about 10 1/2" long by 3" wide, and stands 9" high with the base. It is in very good condition, with a slight split in the base. The price is $225.00. Inventory Code: THRS.   See a slideshow of several views [313k] ... Carved bird ... The other side ... Whimsey carved man and womanThis is an unusual carved cedar whimsey of a man and woman joined with a link between their heads. The people are mortised in to a carved hard pine base which has carved initials A C (??) on the bottom. The people are lightly varnished, and the base has a natural surface, except on the bottom, which is painted blue. Including the base, the carving is over 9" tall, 3 1/2" wide and 2 1/2" deep. The people are each about 1" in diameter. This piece was probably made about the 1960's and is in excellent condition. The price is $185.00. Inventory Code: THOT.   See a slideshow of several views [302k] ... Whimsey carved man and woman ... Two more views ... Side and back views ... Closeups of heads ... Closeup of middle ... Train whimsey in bottleThis small bottle whimsey has a brightly painted train inside a long, narrow bottle. The wooden train has four cars with applied wheels. The cars are connected to each other with metal links. Each car is glued in place to the bottle, so that the train does not move around. Two small carved and painted blocks make up a base. The bottle measures 7 1/4" long by 1 1/4" in diameter. It is 1 5/8" high sitting on the base. The condition is excellent. Age is unknown, but it appears to be 1950's or 60's. The price is $95.00. Inventory Code: TCSC.   Train whimsey in bottle ... The other side ... From above ... End view ... The other end ... From below ... Removed from base.

Memory jugThis is an attractive memory jar built over a stoneware container. It is decorated with shards of floral china, fancy textured colored glass, mirror, and beads. It stands 10" high by 7" in diameter. Some of the smallest beads are missing, along with a few flakes of the putty around the rim. The overall condition and look are very good. This piece was probably made in the 1920's or 30's. The price is $350.00. Inventory Code: TAHA.   Memory jar ... Second side ... Third side ... Fourth side ... Closeup ... Another closeup ... Carnival knockdownsHere are two carnival knockdowns in the form of clowns. They are made from painted canvas, with wool hair. One is mounted on a hinged base, the other will sit upright on its own. They are both old and used, in good condition with normal wear and slight fading. The one with the base is 16 1/2" high by 11" wide by 3 1/2" thick. The other one is 14 1/2" high by 11" wide by 1 1/2" thick. They are priced at $175.00 each, with a discount for the pair. Inventory Code: TPCK.   Carnival knockdowns ... It is carved from a light colored wood, likely pine, and measures 10" long by 3/4" by 3/4". The condition is excellent, and it is old and oxidized. The price is $155.00. Inventory Code: TSOP.   Figural whimsey carving ... Closeup of head ... Another overall view ... Second closeup ... Third closeup ... Fourth closeup ... A third overall view.

Carved gorillaHere is a very expressive old carved gorilla. It is 7" high by 5" wide by 2 1/4" deep, in excellent condition. The price is $135.00. Inventory Code: TSAR.   Carved gorilla ... Another angle ... One side ... The other side ... From above ... Back ... From below.

Miniature cupboardThis is a miniature cupboard that would make a nice jewelry box, display for smaller pieces, or can stand alone. It has a double curve in the top, and two doors with glass windows above four drawers. It is painted cream, with dark gold and green trim. The condition is very good, with a little dirt and minor paint wear. One drawer has a missing pull ring. This cupboard stands 21" high, 11 1/2" wide, and 6 1/2" deep. It was made in the 1940's or 50's. The price is $175.00. Inventory Code: TSTS.   Miniature cupboard ... Another view ... With drawers and doors open ... One side ... The other side ... Back view ... Carved frameThis is a very detailed carved and painted wooden desk frame. It is in the form of a house, with a heart under the eaves, patterned shutters, and a small fenced yard. The picture goes in the open window. On the back is painted "Masseille France 1945". It is 10 3/4" high by 11" wide by 2 3/4" deep. The opening is 2 3/4" high by 2" wide. The condition is excellent, with very slight paint loss on two of the fence posts. The price is $135.00. Inventory Code: TSTP.   Carved frame ... 3/4 view ... One side ... The other side ... Tramp art crossThis is a large tramp art crucifix with very fine workmanship, from Belgium. The cross is built up in eight layers, the base in seven to nine layers, with three-layered feet. It is decorated with metal tacks, and has a chip-carved ladder and tongs. There are remnants of a medium lacquer finish, and also areas of white and black paint, giving an unusual, textured surface. The back has remnants of elaborate cigar box labels. It dates from the late 1800's to about 1900, and stands 25" high by 13" wide by 5" deep. The condition can only be described as poor: one of the four "rays" is missing, there are several smaller chips missing, and there was probably a corpus originally. In spite of the condition, the look and overall effect are very strong, and it remains a beautiful object as it is. The price is $250.00. Inventory Code: APAK.   Tramp art cross ... Iron horsesThis is a pair of figural cast iron shoe rests. They were used when someone had their shoes shined. The figures are standing horses. Made in the late 1800's to early 1900's, these are in excellent condition, with somewhat worn old silver paint from around the 1930's. Each piece stands 6 1/2" high and long, with a base 3 1/2" in diameter. The price is $325.00 for the pair. Inventory Code: ATKH.   Figural cast iron shoe shine rests ... The other side ... Drawing of boxersThis is a drawing on paper by Morris Howard which incorporates three images of the same boxer in one scene. It shows a close-up of him standing, one working out on the heavy bag, and one in the ring fighting another boxer. The boxer appears to be Sugar Ray Robinson, and the images may have been drawn from photographs. The drawing is 24 1/4" by 15 3/4" and is matted and framed. The frame is 32" by 23 1/2". It is in excellent condition. The price is $250.00. Inventory Code: TRSK.   See a slideshow of several views [635k] ... Drawing of boxers ... Closeup ... Another closeup ... Third closeup ... Metal can shelvingHere is a folky "Make Do" metal shelving display unit made from one gallon metal Texaco cans riveted together. Each can was cut on an angle, and the edges folded in. It was probably made for tools and parts in a shop. There is a pair of long metal straps on the back which make it easy to hang. It will also stand on its own. The cans probably are from about the 1970's. There is some scratching and very minor rust on this unusual piece, but it is still very sturdy and decorative. It would be great for displaying or storing small items and is just the right size for your CDs. The height is 41", while it is 16 1/2" wide by 5 3/4" deep. Each bin is 3 7/8" wide by 6 1/2" high. The price is $225.00. Inventory Code: THPK.   See a slideshow of several views. [398K] ... Metal can shelving unit ... One side ... The other side ... Front view ... With CDs and small carvings ...
