This is a collection of 12 lover's whimseys all made by the same person in the 1930's. They were carved by Marshall Garrett for his future wife Leona McMartrie. Many of them have written or carved names and dates. They are all mounted in a recently made wood shadow box, contained in a frame from the general time of the carvings. It is unusual to find so many pieces done by one person, and even more unusual that some are signed and almost all are dated. All have been mounted so they can easily be removed, turned, etc.
The whimseys include the following:
1. A small ball-in-cage, 1 5/8" long by less than 1/2" deep and wide. This has "Made by Garrett" and "Aug 15, 1934".
2. A block with a heart with arrow through it on one side and an M on the other. These are deeply relief carved. It also has "Garrett M." and "Aug. 25 '34" incised on two other sides. This is 1 5/8" by 1 1/2" by 1".
3. A small saddle. This is 1 1/4" long by 3/4" wide and 3/4" high. It has "GM 5-16-34" written inside.
4. A larger saddle. This one is a little over 1 5/8" long by 1 1/8" wide by 1" high. It has "Aug 23, 1934" incised inside.
5. Two sets of interlocking hearts. The smaller one is about 1" wide, with a thickness of a little less that 1/4". It can be extended to about 2 1/8" long. On it are written their names, one on each heart.
6. This larger interlocking heart is about 1 3/16" wide, with a thickness of about 3/8". It can be extended to about 2 1/2". It is dated, "Aug 11, 1934".
7. Two hearts with rectangular openings through which passes an arrow. The arrow head and tip are larger than the openings. The hearts are each about 1 1/4" long, 3/16" thick and 1" wide. On one is written "Garrett M" and "1933". The other has "Leona M".
8. A little carved hand gun. This is 1 1/2" long by 5/8" high and 1/4" thick. It has "Sept 34" and what looks like "G and M".
9. A sword or scimitar. This is about 3 1/2" long by 1" high and 5/16" thick. It has incised and perhaps burned in, "AUG. 24-35".
10. A ball-in-cage with two pyramid ends. This is about 2: long by 5/8" wide and deep. On it is written "Made Aug 15, 1934".
11. Another ball-in-cage. This has one pyramid end and a loop on top. It is about 2 1/2" long by 5/8" wide and deep. This has some red paint or ink on it and also "1934".
12. A comparatively larger block with rounded ends, and carved on both sides. This is 4 1/2" long by 1 3/8" high by 1/2" thick. On one side is relief carved a wing with interlocking hearts and a arrow through them in the center. These are flanked by the initials L.M. and G.M. The other side is carved with Leona McM. On one edge is written "August - 1934".
All the pieces are in excellent condition (other than the red on one). All but the largest are carved from softwood - likely bass and pine. The largest is oak. The price is $475.00. This is a wonderful folk art portrait titled "To Be A Man". It is painted in the style of the African hair signs, but with much more realism and depth of feeling. The back actually has preliminary sketching and lettering for a different hair sign. It is painted on 3/8" plywood, and signed "By Victor Asante 27 Nov. 2004". The piece measures 25" high by 17 3/4" wide. It is not quite rectangular, and the bottom corners are rounded. There is some damage around the edges and nail holes where it was mounted, as is common with hair signs. This is visible in the photos, and does not detract from the strong image. The price is $340.00. Inventory Code: TRAT.

Here are two folky, hand made, painted ring toss games. Each has a handle for the player to hold while swinging the ring on the string and trying to catch it on the man's nose. These both have wooden bases they set into for display.
This man is cut from pine, painted with a suit and tie, green hat, and red nose, and then varnished. It has a great surface, with heavier patina on the handle from lots of use. The donut-shaped wooden ring appears to have been hand carved. At one time it was cracked and reglued. The man measures 9 1/2" long by 6" high by 5/8" thick. The ring is 3 1/4" in diameter by 3/8" thick. It is in very good, used condition with minor surface wear, especially on the ring and the tip of the nose. Probably it was made in the 1930's or 40's. The old string is fragile. The price is $100.00. Inventory Code: THHK. Ring toss game ... The other side ... With the ring on his nose ... Front views ... Back view ... Off the base ... This ring toss man is cut from 1/4" plywood, painted with a silver face, dark red hat, and black handle. He is 7 3/4" long by 5" high. The ring is two layers of heavy rubber, probably gaskets of some kind, glued together and painted dark brown. He is in very good, used condition with minor surface wear, from the 1930's or 40's. The string is old and used, but may have been replaced. The price is $85.00. Inventory Code: THHR. Ring toss game ... The other side ... Front and back views ... With the ring on his nose ... This tramp art frame has very nice color and a style and chipping that is a little different than most. The frame was painted blue, then varnished, which gives a medium green color. The blue is still visible on the back. It is three layers deep plus an extra (fourth) pyramid on the corners. It is in excellent condition, with no breaks or loss, and appears to have been made about the 1930's. The size is 8 3/4" by 10 3/4", with an opening of 3 3/4" by 5 3/4". The price is $145.00. Inventory Code: AWCC. Image ... Back.
This is an exceptional relief carved and painted whisk broom holder covered with fraternal symbols. It includes the three rings and axe of Odd Fellows, the sword and moon of the Shriners, and the star of Rebecca. In addition, it has a face carved in a center panel and the words "MELHA" and "In Hoc Signo Vinces". The size is 14" high, about 10" wide, and 5" deep. It is made out of pine, and was probably done around the early part of the 1900's. The condition is very good, with one tiny chip, very slight paint loss, and a tight age crack on the front. The carving is even more detailed than the photos show. The price is $675.00. Inventory Code: AWCR. Overall Image ... Close-up of the top ... Lower front, from below ... First are two roosters that appear to be made by the same hand. The larger one has mottled glaze, 3 1/4" high. It has been broken in half and reglued. The price for this larger rooster is $45.00. Inventory Code: PCRH.
The smaller one is folky and stylized, with good form, in a dark glaze. It is in perfect condition, and is 2" tall. The price for the smaller rooster is $95.00. Inventory Code: PCRW. This is a beautiful tramp art magazine rack, decorated with birds on free-form branches and dated 1927. Below the birds is a large sunburst. The front folding section is attached with two chains, and includes a star and the inscription "Souvenir De L'Exposition". The date is in the center of the lower diamond. The birds, all the many spear tips, and a few other highlights are painted a dark mustard. The rest of the piece is patterned with light and dark woods, finished with a clear lacquer or varnish that is slightly bubbled. This rack is presumably Canadian, with the French inscription and a partly visible Postum label on the back. It is in outstanding, excellent condition. There are very skillful repairs on the two birds, and one very tiny chip missing from one spear. This impressive piece measures 29 3/4" high by 19 1/2" wide by 7 3/4" deep. The price is $1150.00. Inventory Code: TKKW.

This is a wonderful, graphic, Amish child's quilt. It is 45" by 64". The small size makes it perfect for display on a wall, although it certainly can be used on a bed or as an accent piece. It was bought from the family in Medina Co., Homersville, OH. This visually interesting cotton quilt is in excellent washed condition and was made around 1950. It is machine pieced and hand quilted. The price is $475.00. Inventory Code: AKHH. Amish child's quilt ... Closeup ... Second closeup ... Third closeup ... Back ... Closeup of back.
Here are two folky, hand-made airplanes; both done by the same person - Oliver Rzick. They were done in 1999 and 2000. They are decorated with stripes and stars cut from newspapers, and have wheels taken from toys. Each has a metal hanger top and bottom, and they can be hung individually or one below the other in a chain.
The first plane, Alaska Air, is an MD-80. It is made from wood covered with a Gesso-like material to give added form. It was then painted gray and decorated with pieces cut from newspapers. It has further detailing done in both paint and marker. It is 28" long, 8" high, and has a wingspan of 29". It is in very good condition with a few flakes of gray paint missing. The price is $210.00. The Stealth Bomber is made from thin tongue and groove wood, with an old varnish surface. Besides the applied paper stars and strips, it has further detailing done in marker. The plane has two sets of metal wheels screwed to the bottom. The third set has the bracket, but the wheels are missing. This plane is 16" long, about 3" high, has a wingspan of about 41". One of several original Mexican Sombreros. They are all in excellent condition, and are not new. They appear to be 20 to 30 years old, or possibly older and are wonderful, decorative objects - in addition to being just the right headwear for that "special" occasion. This sombrero is a very splashy black velvet decorated top and bottom with applied, silver and white braid and multicolored sequins. It is in excellent condition, and measures 24" across. You can see the rest on our Sombreros page. The price is $125.00. Inventory Code: AHHW. Top view ... Closeup of top ... Bottom view ... Side view.

This is a nice, large, memory bottle. It is covered with hundreds of beads, buttons, jewelry, and trinkets, including many interesting and unusual objects. It is in excellent condition with only a tiny bit of loss. There is a badge from 1963, and it seems to be from that age. The bottle is 14" high and 7" in diameter. Inventory Code: AWHP. This is a pair of iron bog shoes with very nice form and look. Similar to snowshoes, but made of metal, these were used for walking across muddy bogs. They were found in Michigan. From the earlier part of the 20th century, these are in good, used condition, slightly warped. They have a dark, oxidized surface with slight remnants of black paint. Each one measures 37 1/4" long by 12 1/2" wide by about 1 1/2" thick. The price is $425.00. Inventory Code: TCWO. Iron bog shoes ... The other side ... Closeup ... Side view ... Another side view ... Here is a small picture made primarily from cut up stamps and highlighted with pen and ink. The scene is the interior of a room with two chairs, fireplace, wall paintings, and more. This is probably about 30-35 years old, with some of the stamps being a bit older. It is marked on the back: "Francisceines Missionnaires de Maire, Quebec". We have had a couple other ones done by them; so apparently this mission made stamp pictures to raise funds. The painting is in excellent condition, with a tear to the backing paper. The frame is 3 1/8" by 4 1/8". The price is $85.00. Inventory Code: ATKA. Image.
This is a very large, unusual and decorative metal wheel with gear teeth around the outer edge. It is painted red and has 14 holes through the body. Near each of the holes is painted a series of numbers. We think this may have been part of a counter mechanism of some sort. It came from a factory North Carolina. The entire wheel is almost 28" in diameter and was cut from heavy sheet steel. It is in good sturdy condition, although has obvious old rust on parts of the surface. This piece seems to have good age, and our guess places it from about the 1950's or older. What it was actually used for, we really do not know; however, it certainly has an interesting and highly decorative look. The price is $295.00. Inventory Code: TRTO. Large industrial gear ... Watercolor by CD Love. There is a sprig of flowers painted on the reverse. It is 6" by 9", in very good condition, the paper is slightly yellowed. From St. Louis area, probably 1940's. The price is $95.00. Inventory Code: APRH. Image.
This is a very folky, out of perspective relief carving of a man, holding a guitar (or is it a gun?), sitting in a chair. The chair seems to float in midair. It is carved, base and all, from a single piece of pine, and painted. The free-standing shape may have been made as a bookend, or just so it would sit on a shelf. C. 1930's, it is 7 1/4" high by 3 1/2" wide by 2 1/2" deep. A small age split in the base does not detract, otherwise it is in very good condition. The price is $225.00. Inventory Code: ASSO. Here is a planter made from an old can surrounded by old-fashioned painted wood clothespins (not the spring type). The weathered paint is brown over green. Probably made around the 1940's, it is in very good condition. The size is 4 1/4" high by 7 1/4" in diameter. The price is $160.00. Inventory Code: PRWS. Image.
This is a carved whimsey that is very interesting in that it seems to have been a work in progress. The balls are still fixed, yet all the hard work was done, so they could have been released easily. The piece has nice form and a naturally aged and darkened surface. It was likely made in the 1940's or so, is 14" long by 1 1/4" square, and in excellent condition. The price is $110.00. This is a hand painted roller skate case, decorated with stickers from roller rinks across Michigan and Ohio. The front has a painted roller skate with wings, and the inscriptions "Eddie" and "Grand Rapids Michigan". The fabric-lined interior has a sticker from Skateland Cleveland Roller Club, with the owner's name and address penciled in. The case is 14" wide by 11 3/4" high by 4 3/4" deep. It is in fair condition, with minor wear to the case, some water staining inside, loss of fabric inside, and loss to many of the stickers. The paint is still strong, and the overall look is great fun. The case and decoration probably date from the 1940's, maybe 50's. The price is $195.00. Inventory Code: TRAA.

This is an extremely unusual, small and intricate tramp art display case. It has a hinged door with glass, and glass on the other three sides. The case contains a crucifixion scene, and includes many carved wooden tools associated with the crucifixion. It also has three lithographs representing Jesus and the two thieves (although they all seem to be Jesus). The case is topped with a cross and has an ornate finial and other details. It is finished in an old, oxidized gold paint, and was likely made around C. 1920's. The case is about 11 1/2" to the top of the cross, by 5 1/2" wide and 4" deep. It is not in perfect condition, as it has quite a lot of bits and pieces of loss. Obviously, this is a consideration, but in balance, is clearly outweighed by the rarity of this one-of-a-kind piece. This is an old, rustic twig stand, with a great look and surface. It was likely made in the 1930's or earlier of hickory or a similar hardwood, with a plywood and pine top. The bark is still on, although a few slivers are curling. The stand is 27 1/4" high, 31" wide, and 15" deep. It is in excellent, sturdy condition. On the back, a bend section of one piece is missing. Here is the classic Pickle in a Bottle. Sealed in a very old bottle is this large pickle in amber colored liquid - probably pickling juice. The pickle is larger than the opening, and fills the square bottle, which is about 6" high by 2 1/4" on each side, and may be from the 1800's. It is in excellent condition. The price is $125.00.
