This is a very large and unusual tramp art frame from the late 1800's. The sides have bold pedestal bottoms and long circular columns with tramp finials resting above them. The surface is dark lacquer, together with very well oxidized gold or bronze paint which was used as accents and highlights. The frame is 37" high by 24 1/2" wide, by 5" deep. The mirror is 29 3/4" by 14 1/2". It is well built all over with good design and form. Multiple layers of chip carved wood - probably cigar box - add good texture and balance. This piece is in generally very good condition; with some slight loss and surface wear to the wood, the replacement of one small piece of wood, and a little bit of loss to the silvering of the mirror. Still, it is extremely nice, strong, and has great presence. The price is $1300.00. Inventory Code: TKRC.

This is a very unusual and folky frame. It has a central section constructed of 5 wavy layers in a tramp art style. The outer portion of the frame has a series of deeply carved serrations, and between this and the inner tramp portion are carved corner blocks and decorative pieces. The construction of the rear of the frame is also unusual and interesting, with hand saw marks. This piece is about 1 3/4" deep. The outer dimensions are 11 3/4" by 9 3/4", while the opening is about 5 7/8" by 3 3/16". The frame has a rich dark surface with reddish/brown tones. It was finished in a dark lacquer which has taken on a very desirable patina. The outside edge was sponge painted. The condition is very good with a slight split on one edge, some minor chipping to the wood quite a long time ago, and the loss of a little of the wood on the back inner section. It was probably from the mid to late 1800's. The price is $425.00. Inventory Code: CSKS.

This is a 2-sided, free-standing tramp art frame. It has two turned uprights which are pegged into the four-layer, chip carved base. The frame itself swivels between the uprights. It has three crosses at the top and bottom, with four layers of chip carving on the front and three on the back. Two photos could be inserted back to back. It is painted an old, oxidized gold over silver, and is from the 1920's or 30's. The frame stands 12 1/2" high by 9" wide by 2 3/4" deep, with an opening 5 1/2" by 3 1/2". The condition is very good, with one old, narrow break approximately 2" long at one lower corner of the base and a couple of small age splits which are very solid, and do not detract from the appearance. The price is $350.00. Image ... Larger image.

This is a good, fluid looking tramp art, double sided standing frame with a swivel mirror, and an old print of some deer opposite. The frame is constructed of pine and plywood. The curved pieces are carved pine which has been chip carved. The flat pieces are plywood - a construction we like since it gives an additional layering effect. The sides are 6 layers plus the curve, while the base and top are 5 layers each. There are additional carved wooden balls as decorative spacers. The surface is an old varnish with crazing. Overall it is in excellent condition, with a tiny chip in one corner and slight silver loss to the mirror. The size is 13 1/4" wide, 14" high, and 3 1/2" deep. It was made around the 1920's. The price is $425.00. Inventory Code: ATOS. Overall Image ... Reverse side overall ... Side and back ... Close up.

Here is an extremely well made, large, and unusual tramp art frame. In addition to the chip carved layers, it has extensive scroll or fretwork with designs including multiple hearts and crosses. There are also small mirrors in the corners and around the sides, a top crest, and words worked in the bottom fretwork. It was found in Pennsylvania, measures 32" by 28" by 3", is eight layers deep, and painted gold - which has oxidized over the years, giving a dark, rich tone. The base frame seems to be from the late 1800's, but the paint is more likely from around the 1920's, so, it may be an older construction that was painted at that time. It is in almost perfect condition. The inscription at the bottom is difficult to make out; it may be "Borze Zbaw Nas". With a slight change in spelling, Google translates this as Polish for "God Save Us". While this is in Polish, it is very likely that the frame is actually American, as that area of Pennsylvania had many European immigrants, some of whom brought this art form here. The price is $1275.00. Inventory Code: CPHS.

It is 15 1/4" by 11 1/4" on the outside, with an opening of 7 5/8" by 4 5/8". The price is $375.00. Inventory Code: TORC.
