The is a wonderfully detailed hand made courtroom scene. The assemblage has four wood carved people, chairs, desk, books, easel, clock, seal of the State of Ohio, and LOTS of other detailed items. The two flags were commercially made, and the picture of Lincoln was cut from something and applied to the white backing. This piece has many amusing features that would take a very long and detailed description to convey. A close examination of the many images should show most. The scene is signed on the bottom "Bains, Sept. 1980". It is in extremely good condition and measures about 17 3/4" wide by 11 1/4" deep. The back is 13" high. It is so detailed it even has a carved and painted court stenographers machine with paper roll, various papers on the desks, a little mouse, spittoon (which has been missed), golf club, magazine on the floor by the judge, and many other items. This is a very unusual, unique piece. The price is $1600.00. Inventory Code: TORW.

The bird and base are all together, having been carved from one piece of wood. The paint is good and old, this piece likely being done in the mid 1900's, and the condition is very good. This is a wonderfully detailed and expressive carved Shotgun Wedding assemblage. It shows a scene in which "Marryin Sam" is making life legal for a very pregnant "Her" and "Him". This is being witnessed by "Gramaw" and "Grampaw" and the proud parents, "Maw", and "Pappy" with his gun, jug of moonshine liquor, and his faithful dog "Rover" by his sides. All the people are carved in detail and have pencil names and drawing for additional highlights. In the center is written, also in pencil, "The Hill Wedding of the Maid who loved too well but not too wise." This piece was likely made around 1930's or 40's. The figures are carved from a soft wood - probably pine or bass. They are all mounted on a thin plywood base. The overall condition is very good, although two of the bases on which the figures are standing were cracked and re-glued quite some time ago, and there is a little loss to the top of the Bible and tip of "Him's" hair. The overall size is 12 1/4" wide by 10" deep. It is about 6 1/2" high. The price is $460.00. Inventory Code: TRTT.

Here is a funny little bird carving. Similar to a sandpiper, it might be called a "shelf piper" - as it certainly looks at home on a shelf. The bird is carved from a hardwood, likely walnut, and has a smooth, dark, rich natural surface. It has beads set in for eyes. One eye is black and the other red, which may account for how it leans a bit to one side. There is a small, old chip missing from the beak, and possibly one from the tail. The bird was probably made about the mid-1900's, and is 6" long by 1 1/4" wide by 4" high. The price is $75.00. Inventory Code: TOWS. Bird carving ... The other side ... Another view ... This is an intricate and detailed scene set in a living room, displayed in a shadow box. All of the items are hand made, carved, and painted. Included are a man in a rocking chair, dog, grandfather clock, fireplace and chimney, mounted cook pot, wall hanging, and corner cupboard. The man is reading a book, cupboard contains additional items, and the dog is lying on a rug atop a wood floor. The box is made from plywood, with a glass front, and a glossy finish to the surface. Inside, the wall and ceiling are lined with burlap. All the pieces making up the scene are very realistic and well done. Adding to the intricacy is the small size. The entire shadow box is only 7 3/4" wide by 5 1/4" high. It is 3" deep. The scene is in very good, sturdy condition, with nothing loose. The condition of the wood box is good, with some slight chipping of the surface. The age is unknown, but it was probably made about the mid 1900's. The price is $350.00. Inventory Code: TWCA. This is an exceptionally nice and unusual handmade, one-of-a-kind dresser piece, with two sections that open for storage. While it has a fraternal look, it may very well have been made for personal use. This piece is made from various woods, two old mirrors, came from Pennsylvania and is dated 1913. The base is plywood while the rest seems to be two or more softwoods. Overall, this construction is about 10 1/4" high. The base is about 5 1/2" by 8" and the legs extend out to 9 1/2" wide by 7" deep. One of the legs has a barely visible crack underneath that was reglued years ago. The very top of the box is decorated with a carved and open book. This has the words Holy Bible spelled with individually carved and applied letters, 3 of which are long gone. The lid opens to reveal a storage area lined with black velvet and a mirror, which has lost much of the silvering. The front of this section has a mirror inserted in a framed portion, the corners of which are carved like supports similar to those which are below. The bottom box also has a hinged top, which opens to reveal a second and smaller storage area. The very top of this box is also relief carved into a decorative form and has the letters "E" and "H" applied - although the "H" is also long gone. The wood seems to have been finished with some stain and a very light varnish or lacquer, and the surface has taken on a very nice and rich patina with fine crazing. While there is a little wear from use and some surface cracks in the plywood this is in overall very good condition and has a wonderful look. The price is $575.00. Inventory Code: CSPO.

This is a folky and amusing carved man. He is wearing overalls and has his hands in the pockets. He is in excellent condition with good paint and surface and was probably carved about the 1970's. The price is $145.00. Inventory Code: TWPT.

This is a selection of 13 old and authentic hand carved and painted Chinese puppets and heads. These are stick puppets: the head, body and arms manipulated with sticks under the costumes from below. There are twelve complete with sticks, carved hands, and handmade costumes; plus four heads without the bodies. Some of the puppets have eyes that move; and some have natural hair. For those with moving eyes, there is a carved rectangular inset in the back of the head which, when pressed opens or closes the eyes.
The puppets range in size from 18" high for the smallest to about 21" for the largest. The heads are about 6 1/2" to 7" high. These puppets were actually used in street theater; unlike newer ones that are reproduced for current sale. They came from Northern China, and seem to range in age from about the 1930's to the 1950's or 60's. They are in very good, used, old condition, and are striking in their individuality. The price of the full puppets range from $175.00 to $325.00. The heads alone are $125.00 each. Inventory Code: AOAW is $325.00; Inventory Code: AOAO is $275.00. This is a very nice whimsey carved church. The body of the church, with the steeple and freely moving captive bell, was carved from a single piece of wood, with the interior hollowed out. The hinged door opens to reveal pews, a pulpit, choir loft, and a cross on the wall that were all carved separately and added. The bell is hung so it can swing. The two step base was carved from a separate piece. The wood is unfinished, in a medium-dark natural shade, except for the two crosses, which are painted gold. It is signed on the bottom "Mr. Ted Hegg Dec. 20, 1965." The church measures 10 1/2" high, 5 1/4" long, and 3" wide, and the condition is excellent. The price is $285.00. Inventory Code: PTAP. This is an extremely nice carved and painted swivel desk frame. It is relief carved with stars, a crescent moon, the frame opening, and what appears to be a beach, ocean, and rock. It is further decorated with blue, orange, yellow, black, and gold paints. In addition the front wood has been punched all over to impart more texture, likely using a nail, in a style similar to pointillism in painting. The frame and uprights are a hardwood, probably maple, while the base is likely pine. The paint is still vibrant, but has also taken on a nice tone. This frame and decoration was likely made about the 1940 or 50's. It is in excellent condition and is 8 1/4" high. The width of the frame and uprights is 6 1/4" while the base is 8 3/8" wide by 1 1/4" deep. The opening is 1 5/8" by about 2 3/16". The price is $225.00. Inventory Code: TWPH.
