The size is 22 1/4" high by 15 1/2" wide by 4 1/2" deep, and it is in mint condition. It was made in the 1960's, with a more recent wire added on the back to hang it from a wall (it can also sit on a shelf). A screw was also added to the back to help hold the picture in. This is a clock case made by the Rev. Howard Finster, with nice painted decoration. It has the original, working clock and original print, and is stamped "Jesus Saves" on the back. It is carved, layered, and painted. The condition is almost excellent, it does have a small scuff on the top of the crest. It measures 22 1/2" high by 15" wide by 4" deep. Finster made these clock cases in the 1960's, embossing the designs with dies he made himself. The price is $1200.00. Inventory Code: AKKW. Howard Finster clock case ... One side ... Here is a four piece miniature, "living room" set, all made by Howard Finster. It is comprised of two small chairs, one larger chair and a larger sofa. These are all old and in generally very good condition. Each has a little bit of wear, chips or scuffs, or other idiosyncrasies. The two small chairs are each about 6" high by 3 1/4" wide and 2 1/2" deep. The large chair is about 8 1/4" high by 5 5/8" wide and 4 1/2" deep. The sofa is about 8" high by 13 1/2" wide and 4 1/2" deep. All the
pieces are made from plywood of various thicknesses, are finished with a clear varnish, and decorated with impressed and burnt designs from dies that Howard made for this purpose. The couch has one little circle painted red. One of the little chairs has some tiny dots of white paint on it. These are all relatively early craft pieces, probably from the 1960's. These are priced individually at $195.00 each for the small chairs, $245.00 for the large chair, and $295.00 for the sofa. The price for the set is $695.00. Inventory Code: AKPK. This is a large and colorful clock case made by Howard Finster, with ink stampings of his name and address on the back. It has very good form, scalloped carving, impressed circles (from a little machine he made), and turned vertical supports in the front. It is in almost perfect condition, except that the very top of the crest has been broken. (This could be rounded easily). The top appliqued "flower" is painted red, green, and white, and around the center are diamonds highlighted in green paint. The print of the roses and the back cardboard are original. The case is 20 1/4" high, 18" wide, and 3 1/2" deep. The surface is a medium brown varnish. It was probably made about the 1960's, and overall, one of the nicer Finster cases around. The price is $395.00. Inventory Code: ARCK. Image ... Closeup of painted detail ... Top half ... Lower half ... One side ... The other side ... Back ... Finster's stamp ... Another copy of the stamp.

This is a clock case made by the Rev. Howard Finster in the 1960's. It has carved, embossed decoration, and the original, working clock. Below the clock is a picture of Jesus behind glass, and on the back he wrote "Jesus Saves" in pencil. The very top was chipped on the back at one time, and then filled. Otherwise the condition is excellent. It measures 21 1/4" high by 14" wide by 4 1/2" deep. The price is $900.00. Inventory Code: TPAC. Howard Finster clock case ... Closeup of upper section ... This is a small Howard Finster clock case. It seems to be one of his earlier pieces and is in almost perfect condition. The case has a dark surface and is decorated with impressions and wood burning with the tools Finster made. This piece is about 12 3/4" high by 12 1/4" wide and 3 1/8" deep. It has a few tiny wear scuffs on the corners and the very tip of the crest, and the varnish has worn in some places. There is a stamp on the bottom which reads Jesus Saves.

Next are two plywood signs with scriptural passages from the Bible. They were made by Floyd Graber, a retired dairy farmer from Freeman, South Dakota and came from his folk art environment, described in Maine Antiques Digest as "somewhat similar to the Finster Paradise Gardens". There is a bio of Graber on the North American Mission Board web site (www.onmission.com/site/c.cnKHIPNuEoG/b.829923/k.3A0/Retirement_by_design.htm) which says in part "Graber made more than a hundred signs with Masonite letters displaying scripture, and he arranged them throughout this garden. He also had an archway with boxes holding Christian literature for those who were interested. Creating interest in the gospel was Graber's goal." These signs apparently were made after 1978 and are in very good condition, with normal wear to the paint. They are each about 7 feet 5" long by 21" high and 1" deep. They are priced separately below.

This is a painted wood door, with an open book, and lettering that begins "Never Judge A Book By Its Cover". The door is an old dark gray/blue on top, and a dark orange/red below, over even older layers of paint including black and a lighter orange. It was pieced from two vertical boards, and still has the latch, handle and bolt. The back is a solid dark gray. The two unpainted strips of wood on the back are beveled on the bottoms and were attached so the door could hang for display off two other similar pieces. They can be easily removed or used for this purpose. The door is 77" high by 27" wide. There are old breaks on two corners, and some paint wear, mainly on the lower portion, visible in the photos. It is sturdy, with a great look that could be stood up, hung on a wall, or mounted as a door. The decoration seems to be c. 1940's, while the door itself is much older. The price is $575.00. This is a two-sided painting on 1/4" plywood from the environment of J.B. Lemming, of Trion, GA. It measures approximately 21 1/4" by 31", with somewhat uneven edges. It is signed in pencil on one side, and shows where he changed his mind about the design and repainted parts. One corner is broken. It shows the typical weathering from its outdoor use, and the paint is strong, bright, and not flaking or cracking.
Lemming created an extremely bright red white and blue environment from his house and yard. He died in the late 1980's, and his work has been drawing strong prices at auction lately. You can see some photos of his house at: http://www.janesaddictions.com/lemming01.htm The price is $800.00. Inventory Code: CPPH. One side ... Closeup ... Reverse ... Closeup reverse, with signature. This is a selection of Amish drawings from OH, done in pastels. The artist, who is in her 30's, has been doing them since she was 12. She draws the images, and some of her family members fill them in, using colors she has selected. Their bishop allows the family to sell the drawings only if they are not signed and their names are not publicized. The drawings portray: an out-of-perspective home scene, and a series of two drawings depicting an Amish woman in a buggy being hit by a train: one just before the accident, and one just after, with the woman, horse, and buggy flying through the air. All are done in strong, rich colors, and have similar qualities of skewed perspective. They measure 30" by 40" and are contemporary pieces. They are priced at $450.00 each.

| Paintings and drawings by the late Robert E. Gilbert (REG) of Jonesboro, TN. In the 1950's through the 70's REG was a prolific producer and contributor of art to science fiction fan magazines (fanzines); in addition to publishing at least one story in a SF pulp. The work for the fanzines were pen and ink, but he also did a large number of sci-fi and outer space paintings in oil, pastels, and water color. In addition, from the 1940's through the 80's he experimented and painted in many other more traditional and non-traditional styles. He died in 1993. We have acquired the full remaining body of his work, over 400 pieces, from his estate. You can also see more of REG's work on his home page. |
This is a spaceship and alien landscape, painted by REG in oil on canvas. It is very detailed, with thickly textured paint built up in dots. A "G" signature is almost hidden in one corner. This is a painting by Robert E. Gilbert of a woman sitting in the woods by rocks and a stream. It is framed and under glass, so it is difficult to tell the paint, but it looks like acrylics, on artist's board. Gilbert, who is known more for his outer space and science fiction paintings and drawings, also seemed to have some strange attitudes toward women, which reflected in cheesecake paintings and "space bimbos" (for example, this painting). This is dated April 21, 1971. This image is 17 1/2" by 23 1/2", while the wood frame is 23 1/2" by 29 1/2" and about 3" deep. The price is $275. Inventory Code: REG 81. Painting by Robert E. | Lewis Smith lived most of his life alone in the woods of Ohio; drawing, writing, and painting on paper, cardboard, and the walls of his house and buildings. His work reflects his preoccupation with muscular women (especially boxers and wrestlers), trains, time, and money. Lewis Smith passed away in 1998. He was in his mid 90's, living in a nursing home. He was reclusive, refusing to speak to almost anyone. When he left his home years ago, the only things he wanted to take were some of his drawings. He decided to let them go shortly before his death. We have over 400 pieces. Sample illustrations available by mail or on his web site. Lewis Smith's work was included in the show and book "ABCD: A Collection of Art Brut". |

This is a very strange lighted shrine that combines chip carved tramp art, found objects, and matchstick inlay. A black priest stands behind the altar, flanked by smaller black and white figures. A worshipper kneels in front of the altar, being blessed by the figure of a crowned and robed saint. The altar is built up from chip carved matchsticks, with chairs and steps made with added heavy copper wire and glossy fabric. The base and back are completely covered with matchsticks, including on the back and bottom. The heart-shaped back has several layers of tramp art around the edge, and a tramp art frame with glass, topped with a glitter cross, set in the center. The back of the frame is hinged to insert a picture. There is a tramp art arch decorated with large artificial roses in the front, and tramp art edging around the base. It has a socket on the back, but does not have the cord to plug in. When we tested the connections, two of the three lights lit. We do not recommend the wiring, because we cannot see why the third bulb does not light. This shrine was probably made in the 1960's or 70's. It is 16 1/4" high by 14 1/2" wide by 11 1/2" deep. The cord is missing, as are a few pieces here and there, but it is in overall good condition ready to display. The price is $325.00. Inventory Code: TSWA. Tramp art and matchstick shrine ...
